188 Collins Street is an iconic building in Hobart’s CBD.
Commonly known as the “Commonwealth Government Centre”, the complex is twice the size of its nearest competitor.
The Commonwealth Government commenced construction of the Tower building in 1969, completing the project in 1973. The 13 floor building was officially opened on 22 February 1974 by the Honourable E G Whitlam, QC MP, and provided Hobart with 15,000m² of premium office space.
In the early 1990’s, three podium buildings were constructed around the existing Tower building: Blocks 1, 2 and 3 provide an additional 8,500m’² of quality office accommodation.
Bellala purchased the complex from the Commonwealth Government in June 2000 and in mid 2007 completed a renovation of the Tower which extended the building from 13 to 15 levels of office space. An extension of the Tower Plaza level was also undertaken which, together with the new levels 14 and 15, created a further 2,300m’² of office space taking the complex’s total net lettable area to over 25,000m’².
The 188 Collins Street site provides 83 secure under cover car parks and a further 12 open air parking spaces on a section of the boundary which extends to Macquarie Street.
